Peace Corps Volunteer Susan Fagan Dies
WASHINGTON, D.C., December 3, 2001—Acting Deputy Director Lloyd Pierson announced today the death of Peace Corps Volunteer Susan Fagan, 39, of Vero Beach, Florida. Ms. Fagan, a recently returned volunteer, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the village of Akwida, Ghana.
Ms. Fagan died on Friday, November 30, in East Liverpool, Ohio, where she was visiting her father. She finished her Peace Corps service on November 2, 2001. The cause of death is suspected to be malaria; however, the results of an autopsy are not yet known.
“Susan Fagan’s death following the end of her service is a tragic loss for Peace Corps,” stated Pierson. “She considered herself very lucky to have discovered the people of Ghana, who did so much with so little, and was anxious to share her adventures with Americans.” Ms. Fagan worked to promote tourism in Ghana, developing tourist management committees in 14 villages so that the villagers could directly benefit from the burgeoning tourist industry.
